General Call for Papers 2021

ACQL 2021 (updated conference format and deadlines)

General Call for Papers

Founded in 1975 in the wake of Canada’s official ratification of biculturalism, the Association for Canadian and Québec Literatures has, over the course of 45 years, emerged as Canada’s premier association for showcasing bilingual research in Canadian and Québec literatures. This year, ACQL’s annual conference will take place at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences from 29 to 31 May, 2021 (pending final Congress dates). We invite proposals on any aspect of Canadian and Québec literatures, including but not limited to those addressing Congress 2021’s general theme of “Northern Relations.” Congress 2021 is organized in partnership with the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Alberta. However, because of the ongoing pandemic, the Federation has confirmed that Congress 2021 will be fully online.

Rollover from Congress 2020

All proposals accepted for ACQL’s 2020 conference will be accepted for the 2021 conference. We ask that you resubmit your proposal with its 2020 acceptance letter to the web form listed below.

New proposals for 2021

The general call for papers invites proposals in English or in French on research, teaching, and professional matters of relevance to current or prospective members. ACQL strongly encourages bilingual sessions. We encourage proposals for a variety of session types:

  • Paper Panel: Panelists present a formal paper of 15-20 minutes, followed by questions and discussion.
  • Seminar Workshop: Participants complete their papers in advance and distribute them to other seminar participants prior to the conference. Participants may still present formal papers of 15-20 minutes, although seminar organizers may all choose to shorten the length of presentations in favour of lengthening the discussion period.
  • Roundtable: Participants give brief presentations (roughly 5-10 minutes) in response to a specific question or concern, followed by discussion and debate with the audience.
  • Pecha Kucha: 20 images are displayed for 20 seconds each, with explanation or commentary keyed to the images.
  • Professional Development Workshop: Intensive presentations led by a moderator, revolving around issues of professional development that are of specific relevance to Canadian and Québec Studies, or around workplace issues of concern to members at all stages of their academic careers.

We welcome proposals for member-organized sessions in any of the above formats. Panel organizers may present their own papers in the session that they organize. Calls for member-organized sessions should be no more than 200 words. They are due on or before 30 November 2020 and will be posted on the ACQL website.

Please submit paper proposals (no more than 300 words) with a short biography in Word or RTF by 31 January 2021. Please specify the nature of your presentation (traditional paper, poster, Pecha Kucha, etc.). All paper or session proposals can be written in French or English, and should be submitted via the ACQL website. Those who propose papers or sessions must be members of the ACQL by 1 March 2021. See the ACQL website (www.alcq-acql.ca) for membership and registration information.

Please note that we are now using an online submission portal. Upload all proposals to our website here: https://alcq-acql.ca/2020-call-for-papers/
